Value golf in England is mostly a weekday matter. The cheapest honest route onto a good course is a weekday green fee at a members' club or a council-run course, or an entry in one of the Open competitions clubs run for visiting golfers with a handicap. The tables below cover twenty-three courses from Berwick to the Lizard, and every standard weekday rate in them starts between £18 and £60. Three championship links above that bound are listed separately, because an Open entry of £30 to £60 gets you onto them for a fraction of their summer green fee.
Prices were read from each club's own website, or the operating council's, on 23 August 2026. Green fees change by season and by day; check the club's page or timesheet before you travel.
How does an Open competition work, and why is it the best value in England?
An Open competition is a club event that golfers from other clubs may enter. You book through the club's own Opens page or booking portal, pay the entry fee and play the course as a competitor on the day rather than as a green-fee visitor, usually for a fraction of the summer rate. Cleveland lists its Mayors Cup Strokeplay on 29 August 2026 at £22 against a peak visitor fee of £60. Goswick, where the booking engine showed a tee time at £130, lists the Peter Holmes Senior Open on 30 September 2026 at £50.
What you need is a current handicap index held through your own club, and an entry made in advance. Filey says entrants must be amateur members of affiliated golf clubs with a valid WHS handicap index; Hartlepool's Scratch Open is for a handicap index of 5.4 or below. Silloth's 2026 entries opened on 5 January. The honest caveat is that you play the format the club has set, a four-ball better-ball, a Texas scramble, an AM/AM or a singles Stableford, at a tee time the club allocates, often alongside golfers you have not met. And ask before you pay whether the fee is per player or per pair: several portals show one figure without saying, Burnham & Berrow's £86 Channel Course 4BBB and Cleveland's £22 team events among them.

Magdalene Fields at Berwick-upon-Tweed calls itself the first, or last, golf course in England: par 72, 6,602 yards, a Willie Park Jr original. Summer is £50 weekday and £55 weekend, and from 26 October the winter rate is £15 for everyone. A member's guest pays £20 in summer and £10 in winter.
Seahouses is an eighteen-hole coastal links-style course whose tenth hole asks for a tee shot all the way over water. Summer 2026 is £38 per round Monday to Friday and £44 at weekends, twilight after 3pm £22 and £27. The 2026 Opens list carries dates and no fees.
Dunstanburgh Castle at Embleton is a links founded in 1900 and redesigned by James Braid, par 70 and 6,287 yards from the whites. Summer is £55 weekday and £65 weekend to 30 September 2026, winter £35 and £40, and a member's guest pays £20 any day. Sunday mornings until 10.30am are kept for club competitions.
Warkworth is a nine-hole links founded in 1891 and played as eighteen from alternate tees, at £35 Monday to Friday and £40 at weekends. Online booking opens ten days ahead, and the club says visitors can occasionally turn up and pay at the bar. Its 2026 Opens, the Senior's Open on 3 September among them, show no fees.
Hartlepool is a links on Hart Warren, founded in 1906 and co-host of the English Amateur in 2024. Its green-fee page is still headed with the 2025 season, so these are the figures the club still publishes and they may change: casual visitors pay £55 after 11am midweek and £65 after 2.30pm at weekends. The Opens page lists the Scratch Open at £40 per person and the Hartlepool Open and Seniors Opens at £40 per team; a guest with a member pays £20 midweek and £25 at weekends.
Cleveland at Redcar describes itself as North Yorkshire's only true championship links, founded 1887 and shaped by Old Tom Morris, Harry Colt and Donald Steel. The 2026 card is the same all year: £60 before 4pm, £40 after. The Opens portal shows £22 for the Mayors Cup on 29 August, the Senior Open 4BBB on 21 September and the 1st Winter Open 4BBB on 27 November, without stating whether that is per player.

Temple Newsam is MacKenzie parkland founded in 1923, owned by Leeds City Council and run pay-and-play by Active Leeds. Adults pay £18 on a weekday and £23 at weekends and bank holidays, and the weekday twilight and winter rates are both £13.60. The council says booking is by telephone only for the foreseeable future.
Bridlington Links is a par 72 links course along the cliff tops and Danes Dyke, operated by Pure Leisure. The summer 2026 poster reads £32.50 midweek and £40 at weekends, and a member's guest pays £27 midweek and £30 at weekends.
Filey, founded in 1897, blends links and parkland. A summer round is £45 Monday to Thursday and £50 from Friday to Sunday, twilight after 3pm is £30 and £35, and the winter round is the same £30 and £35. The Opens page lists dates without fees and asks for a valid WHS handicap index through an affiliated club.
Scarborough South Cliff is a Dr Alister MacKenzie championship course founded in 1903 and joint host of the English Amateur in 2016. The winter card was £30 and £35, and signed in by a member you pay £25 midweek and £27.50 at weekends in season, or £15 off-season.

Southport Golf Links is council-run by Sefton Council: opened in 1912 as nine holes on reclaimed land, extended to eighteen in the 1930s, designed by Harry Shapland Colt. Adults pay £19 Monday to Friday and £21 at weekends and bank holidays, twilight in the two hours before sunset is £13, and booking is through the pro shop.
Knott End on the Fylde coast has a front nine along the Wyre estuary and a back nine through a tree-lined valley, and prices summer 2026 by the clock: £35 for a weekday tee time before 1pm, £30 from 1pm to 4pm, £15 at weekday twilight. The club's standard summer rate is £45, which is what those bands sit beneath.
Morecambe is a seaside course by Dr Alister MacKenzie, founded in 1905. Summer 2026 is £40 on a weekday and £45 at the weekend, with a Monday special at £27.50 and twilight at £25 and £30. The Opens are listed with dates but without fees, and the club publishes a £30 rate for golfers living within fifty miles.
Furness on Walney Island was founded in 1872 and calls itself the third oldest links and the sixth oldest course in England. Summer adults pay £50 on a weekday and £60 at weekends and bank holidays, and winter is £35. Its Opens are the cheapest in these tables: the Mixed Pairs 4BBB on 23 August 2026 at £15, the Autumn Open 4BBB and the Winter Texas Open at £25 each. A guest with a playing member pays £25 in summer and £20 in winter.
London and the Sussex coast

Chingford is an eighteen-hole course run by the City of London Corporation as part of Epping Forest, par 72 and 6,342 yards. Weekdays are £19 before 1pm, £15 from 1pm to 4pm and £11 after 4pm; weekends are £28.50, £20 and £11 for the same bands.
Richmond Park is a Royal Parks site operated by Loyaltee Golf, two eighteen-hole courses opened in 1923. The published rate is "from £25" online, £5 more in store, and every tee time is booked online and paid in advance. The booking engine showed £29.60 for a Tuesday lunchtime, £20 at 5pm the same day and £40 on a Sunday afternoon.
Hollingbury Park in Brighton is downland on the Sussex Downs, par 72, established 1908: £28 on a weekday and £37 at weekends and bank holidays. The course is municipal; its site does not name the operator.
Seaford Head is run and managed by Seaford Town Council: clifftop downland founded in 1887 with the Seven Sisters in view. The card running to 31 March 2027 is £36 midweek and £41 at weekends, and reduced guest green fees are £28 midweek and £32 at weekends.

Cleeve Hill above Cheltenham is an Old Tom Morris design revised by Dr Alister MacKenzie, on common land and open to the general public; the club calls it an inland links. The summer card is banded by the clock: before noon £50 weekday and £60 weekend, noon to 4pm £40 and £50, after 4pm £25 and £30. Its 2026 Opens carry dates and no fees.
Burnham & Berrow's Channel Course is a nine-hole links played as eighteen for £45 or nine for £30. It sits beside a Championship course that hosts The Open Qualifying Series Final and is priced at £225 from May to September with a handicap limit, which is why the Channel is the value play. The 4BBB Open on the Channel on 6 September 2026 is shown at £86, with no note of whether that covers one player or the pair.
Minehead & West Somerset, founded in 1882, is a links whose club calls itself Somerset's oldest still playing its original course. A weekday single is £48 and a weekend £58. The Opens page prices the South West Family Four Ball on 6 September, the Ladies Team Open Bowmaker on 1 October and the Men's Winter Scramble Open on 10 October at £40 each; a member's guest pays £27 midweek and £29 at weekends.
Weston-super-Mare is a MacKenzie links at the southern end of Weston Bay, par 70. The standard fee is £60 weekday and £70 weekend, but the club publishes an online offer of £40 and £50 for tee times between 2pm and 4pm. The Bleadon Bowl family foursomes on 13 September 2026 is £40 and a Seniors Open on 30 June 2027 is £35.
Mullion on the Lizard is clifftop links and the most southerly course in England. The green fee is published as a range, £50 to £75, with reduced rates online and pre-1pm tee times released three days ahead. The Ladies' Poldhu Cup on 4 September 2026 and the Seniors Men Autumn Open Betterball Pairs on 1 October are both £30, and a member's guest pays £28.
Silloth, Bamburgh and Goswick: is a £120 links ever value through the Open?

These three are here because the Open entry is the reason to go. Silloth on Solway, a links routed by Davy Grant and Willie Park Jnr, charges £120 any day in summer 2026; its 2026 Opens were £35 for the Ladies Open Singles, £50 for the Seniors Open and £60 for the 36 Hole Open Scratch, and entries opened on 5 January. Bamburgh Castle calls itself one of the truest links experiences to be had in England, charges £80 Monday to Thursday in summer, and prices its Seniors Gents Open 4BBB on 24 September 2026 at £30 and every listed 2027 Open at £35; Saturdays are usually given over to club competitions. Goswick, founded 1889 near Berwick, describes itself as one of the world's few pure fescue links and is a regional qualifying venue for The Open; it publishes no fixed rate card, the booking engine showed one tee time at £130, and the Peter Holmes Senior Open on 30 September 2026 is £50.
What counts as value here?
Value in these tables is a published weekday figure set against what the club says it is. Eighteen pounds buys MacKenzie parkland at Temple Newsam, £19 buys a Colt links at Southport or a morning in Epping Forest, £35 buys Warkworth's links, and £50 buys Furness, Magdalene Fields or Scarborough South Cliff in high summer. The championship links along the same coasts, whose summer fees sit above the bound of these tables, are reached by the same visitor for £22 at Cleveland or £50 at Goswick if they enter the Open rather than book the tee time.
A visitor pays less in four ways here. Go on a weekday: the weekend premium is £5 at Temple Newsam and Morecambe, £10 at Minehead and Weston. Enter the Open. Play the winter card: Magdalene Fields drops to £15 from 26 October and Scarborough South Cliff to £30. Or take the clock rate: twilight is £13 at Southport, £15 at Knott End, £22 at Seahouses and £25 at Cleeve Hill after 4pm, and Cleveland is £40 after 4pm on any day of the year.
How do I get a tee time as a visitor?
Almost every club in these tables books visitors through its own online tee booking page or the Pro Shop, and a few set the rules tighter. Richmond Park takes every tee time online and paid in advance; Temple Newsam takes bookings by telephone only; Warkworth opens its online book ten days ahead; Mullion releases morning times three days ahead.
Handicap evidence matters more for Opens than for ordinary green fees, but Furness wants a club or society membership from every visitor and Minehead asks for a reasonable standard of play. Visitor days are the other thing to read before you travel: Knott End does not offer Saturday mornings, Dunstanburgh keeps Sunday mornings until 10.30am for its members, Hartlepool takes casual visitors after 11am midweek, and Bamburgh's Saturdays are usually taken by competitions. If your own club issues a County Card, most of these sites publish a rate for it.
What this list leaves out
Courses with no published price are not here. Several well-known names publish nothing but a booking engine, or a page with a season heading and no figures beneath it, and a handful of sites would not open at all on 23 August 2026; none of those appear above, in either direction.
The Open column is the least complete thing on the page. Some clubs host their Opens on a portal that did not open to someone outside the club, so their cell says so; others publish dates and no fees; and where a fee appears as one figure, the club may mean per player or per pair and often does not say. The Opens are seasonal and the fixture list turns over each winter, so a fee printed against a 2026 date is what that club asked that year. Hartlepool's green-fee page was still headed 2025 on the day it was read, and Silloth's winter band was labelled 2024/25, so both may be older than they look.
Whatever you plan from here, open the club's own green-fee page and its Opens page before you travel, and read the date on each. A five-minute call to the Pro Shop will settle anything the page leaves open.
